Salmon farming
RY works closely with the west coast district salmon fishery boards and trusts to support and enforce better regulation and management of damaging interactions between aquaculture and wild salmon populations.
Formal responsibility for farm salmon wild salmon interactions is being assumed by SEPA and consultations on this are underway with a new regime likely to be in place next year. In the meantime wild salmon – farmed salmon interactions are being regulated by Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) negotiated as part of the planning consent process for aquaculture. A number of EMPs are in place and Fish Legal is assisting west coast boards both in trying to enforce those agreements to deliver genuine adaptive management to protect wild fish.
